In this presentation, Jeff Hamond, the lobbyist for community foundations in Washington, D.C., will summarize his work and explain provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that will have the greatest impact on nonprofits and philanthropy. He will also trace recent developments in the debate over regulating donor-advised funds and some of the recent proposed Treasury regulations that would have impacted them. Finally, Jeff will summarize some of the biggest issues affecting community foundations in the current political environment and how different foundations are responding.
Jeff Hamond is an accomplished advocate for philanthropic organizations, the communities they serve, and the people and organizations that fund them. He was the top economic policy advisor for Sens. Charles Schumer (D-NY), John Kerry (D-MA) and Evan Bayh (D-IN) over a 12-year Senate career and now directs the Philanthropy Practice at Van Scoyoc Associates, a practice dedicated solely to philanthropy and nonprofits.
For more than a decade, Jeff and his team have worked to help private and community foundations, and others in the philanthropy space, share the good work they are doing in local communities directly with Members of Congress, help clients strategize about their own advocacy work, and educate lawmakers about the consequences of adverse policy choices. Jeff initiated the creation of the Community Foundation Awareness Initiative (CFAI), a partnership of over 170 foundations nationwide which established a distinct voice for community foundations in Washington and helps philanthropy leaders engage with Congress on issues that impact them.
