Growth Makes 2011 a Fine Vintage for Hermann

The Community Foundation of the Hermann Area, Inc., has enjoyed an unprecedented year of growth. As with many organizations, growth comes in leaps and plateaus. The leaps for CF of HA came through the creation of several new funds, often through partnerships with other civic organizations. These included the Colonel Edwin P. and Mary Streck Foundation, which supports the visual and performing arts at Hermann High School, and the Brush and Pallette Club, a group of artists with a strong interest in preserving the architecture and civic beauty of Hermann such as the city’s historic rotunda and historic sections of the City of Hermann Cemetery.
The CF of HA has partnered with the Gasconade Co. R-I High School Alumni Association to provide administrative support for the Alumni Association’s Scholarship Funds. The Alumni Association, organized in October 2010, provides traditional scholarships to students headed to further education, with some unique “extension” options for students in their third and fourth years who take advantage of A+ and dual-credit opportunities.
Finally, a unique fund was created by a local alumnus. The Blue and White Fund was the vision of Michelle Ellis, who wished to help teachers with extra funding. The first fundraising event, The Blue and White Banquet, raised more than $16,000, which has been distributed to the district.
The CF of HA continues to support the Crusade Against Cancer, a local charity that provides financial support to cancer patients. The CAC fund averages about $25,000 in yearly distributions and has helped more than 150 cancer patients in the last six years.
CF of HA, through the Rural Schools Partnership, helped access a Coover Place-Based Learning Grant that provided opportunities for high school students interested in Hermann’s history.
Students were engaged in 21st century learning skills as they researched local history and produced recordings of their work for use in the Museum at the German School. This learning experience was presented to the annual Missouri School Boards Association as a model learning program.
Finally, the CF of HA has begun an annual tradition of holding a luncheon for its fund partners. At the Annual Luncheon, the CF of HA welcomed CFO staff members Julie Leeth and Winter Skelton, who presented $25,000 in matching grant funds. When the year-to-year growth figures were shared, the CF of HA was pleased to announce an almost 300 percent growth for the last fiscal year.
