News and Updates

Foundation Works with Republic School District to Keep Kids from Going Hungry

Laura Parks and Katie Frey

The Republic Community Foundation has been making strides recently in the western Greene County community, and this past year recognized 13 organizations and their volunteers at its annual community banquet.

More than 130 people attended the event, where grantmaking efforts ranged from the Wilson’s Creek Battlefield Foundation, the Republic High School Band Boosters, and the start-up of what is now an already active Care to Learn chapter to help provide health, hygiene and food needs in the school district.

One local philanthropy, in particular, has been making a difference for a while now for Republic school children in need of additional food; this year, that group received another boost from the Republic Community Foundation. Since it’s been in existence, the RCF has helped support the People Helping People organization and their off-shoot project, Tiger Totes.

This project was started by two sisters, Laura Parks and Katie Frey (pictured), who volunteered at People Helping People and saw the need to provide children who needed food during the weekend when they are not in school. This year, these sisters were recognized as the “Volunteers of the Year” in Republic. During the year they wrote and received a grant from the Republic Community Foundation for the Tiger Totes project.
