MACF Fund Makes $3,000 Gift to Big Brothers Big Sisters Monett to Expand After-School Program

The Monett Area Community Foundation has awarded a $3,000 grant to Big Brothers Big Sisters Monett to increase the size and scope of its After School Mentoring program at two Monett schools. The funds are distributed from the Tom and Mary Del Clark Fund, a component fund of the MACF, which is an affiliate of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.

The Clark Community Mental Health Center, which was established and substantially funded by the estate of Tom and Mary Del Clark, will track the grant project’s progress. Its mission is community outreach for child advocacy, drug and alcohol abuse, and adult and child mental health.

This year’s grant recipient, Big Brothers Big Sisters Monett, plans to use the funds to grow its After School Mentoring program at Monett Middle School and expand into Monett Intermediate School. The organization currently serves 14 at-risk youth at Monett Middle School, with a goal to serve at least 30 children between the two facilities beginning with the fall 2012 semester. The grant funds will help provide site supervision, background checks, supplies, activities and snacks for the children and their matching “Bigs.”’

“We believe, and data seems to support, the positive influence that is provided to these at-risk students will have a lasting effect on their behavior and future success,” said Don Tuck, Site Coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters Monett.

The Tom and Mary Del Clark Fund was established at the couple’s direction through their estate, as Tom and Mary Del were killed in a motorcycle accident in 1989 while on a touring vacation in Switzerland. The estate transferred grantmaking authority to the Monett Area Community Foundation which awards grants on a semi-annual basis to area organizations.

A Big Year for Betterment in Monett

Through a series of grants for local organizations and a focus on planned giving, the Monett Area Community Foundation laid the groundwork in 2011 for what should be a very bright future for the community that straddles the Barry/Lawrence county line.

Among the group’s accomplishments:

The MACF made a five-year commitment to the local YMCA. They’ll grant $5,000 per year (totaling $25,000) to help with the construction of the Monett facility, which is estimated to cost more than $11 million.

“This is certainly a quality-of-life addition for our community,” said MACF President Mark Nelson.

The Barry-Lawrence County Library also received a challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for the purchase and replacement of approximately 90 computers. Under the challenge, the MACF provided $2,500 and the other area foundations were asked to collectively match that amount to receive the additional funds from the Gates foundation. With the help of the foundations in Mt. Vernon and Aurora, the library received the funds.

The MACF also provided about $1,000 to the City of Monett for the annual fireworks celebration, which happened just after the end of the 2011 fiscal year.

Additionally, CFO awarded $5,000 to the Monett CUB Fund for Monett Public Schools (a component of the Monett Area Community Foundation) for successfully completing the Harry Cooper Supply Company Campaign for the Ozarks to build long-term education funding through philanthropy. Monett raised $10,917 to receive the matching funds from the Cooper Phase II Challenge through CFO’s Rural Schools Partnership. The total of $15,917 is designated for educational endowments.
