Seniors Benefit from Strong Affiliate Partnership

The Area Agency on Aging Region X Homebound Meal program serves meals to approximately 1,200 homebound clients in Barton, Jasper, Newton, and McDonald counties; an average of 700 active daily clients.

As everyone knows by now, 2011 has been an extraordinary year for Joplin and the surrounding area. The massive E-F5 tornado that devastated the city hit near the very end of the 2011 fiscal year, and has taken up most of the efforts of Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri, Inc., staff and board members since that day. But the CFSWMO was busy on a number of fronts before the tornado struck, including its partnership with a vital organization that helps stock the pantries of hundreds of seniors across four counties.

Each year, winter weather and spring storms prohibit the delivery of meals. The Area Agency on Aging Region X Homebound Meal program’s primary goal is to supply homebound clients with a healthy, shelf-stable meal when inclement weather or emergency situations occur. The emergency meal pack helps sustain clients until regular delivery resumes. These meals may be the only meals available to homebound clients and are critical to their well being.

“We have several instances of persons being totally alone and they have been without food for quite some time. Without our meals, they have no food,” said Stephanie Denham, Nutrition Program Director, explaining why the emergency meal packs are so important. “The city limit boundaries are not the community limit. So our persons who live on rural routes really benefit from the emergency meal packs since it may take several days for us to get to them during flooding, snow, or ice.”

Jerri Sargent, Director of the Meals on Wheels program through the Webb City Senior Center, delivers emergency meal packs with daily meals. During the 2011 blizzard, the senior center and was closed for four days. Meals on Wheels clients were unable to receive their daily meal for a week.

Sargent explained that many Meals on Wheels clients may only see the person (primarily volunteers) who delivers their daily meal.

“It’s the kind smile and a friendly ‘Hello’ that really seems to matter,” she says.
