Coover Participation Helps Fight Poverty, Hunger in Ozark County

Commerce Trust Vice President Jill Reynolds (left) presents a $14,000 Coover grant to Edwina Cummings and Betty Stanley, representing an Ozark County coalition working on the school district’s backpack program.
When opportunity knocks, it pays to answer the door. They know this lesson in Ozark County, and two county schools, a food pantry and the Community Foundation took advantage of not one but two of CFO’s Coover grant opportunities during 2010-11 to the tune of $34,000.
CFO, in partnership with Commerce Trust, awarded a $14,000 Coover Regional Grant to the Ozark County Community Foundation, Gainesville R-V Schools, and the Ozark County Ministerial Alliance to combat children’s hunger. The grant was one of 12 awarded across southern Missouri through the Louis L. and Julia Dorothy Coover Regional Grantmaking Program aimed at fighting rural poverty.
Ozark County’s program serves about 45-48 elementary school kids each week with weekend backpacks that include canned meat, canned and dried fruit, juice, shelf milk and other staples. The Gainesville Youth Empowerment Project packs the food each week and fuel costs are donated. The project started as a vacation bible school initiative last year and has received $1,500 grants from the YEP chapter and White River Valley Electric Company, along with other donations from local businesses and churches.
Then, in May, Dora students were awarded $20,000 Coover grant awarded by the Rural Schools Partnership for a digital storytelling project to learn more about the history of the area as well as how to produce video documentaries.
The students, with English teacher Zak Hamby, are using traditional research methods to learn about a variety of subjects, such as the historical mills in the area, the Civil War heritage, local Native American tribes, cultural traditions, and personal histories. The students are producing digital stories based on their research to present at a school film festival.
