Lockwood Crosses Million-Dollar Milestone

The Lockwood Community Foundation’s successes over the past year included working with Lockwood Schools to raise $10,000 in order to receive a $10,000 matching grant from the Harry Cooper Supply Company Campaign for the Ozarks Phase II to support rural education endowments. Lockwood Superintendent Bill Rogers, left, accepts the ceremonial check from the CFO’s Winter Skelton, Foundation President Fred Lemons and Board Member LaRue Lemons.
You might think Lockwood an unlikely place to find one of CFO’s most asset-strong affiliates. But that would sell Lockwood short. The tight-knit Dade County community — with the help of a large bequest received last year — has made the Lockwood Community Foundation one of the CFO’s 14 million-dollar affiliates. They celebrated that new status in July with a luncheon for board members, donors and volunteers at the Roy E. Carr American Legion Post in Lockwood.
The CFO made an unrestricted $500 President’s Grant to Lockwood for reaching the milestone.
Lockwood crossed the $1 million threshold this year after receiving a $250,000 bequest from the estate of John Tubaugh, a Golden City native who became a successful businessman in St. Louis. His total scholarship fund, shared equally between Lockwood and the DACO Community Foundations, will benefit students from all Dade County high schools when it begins making awards in 2012.
Also, in the spring, the Lockwood Community Foundation brought the Springfield Pottery Claymobile to town for students in the first through sixth grades.
“We hope to do that again this year,” said LCF President Fred Lemons.
