Community Grants Making Huge Difference
In an economic climate where the difference between survival and disappearance for a non-profit can be just a few thousand dollars, a community foundation can be a savior. And that’s just the role that the Eldon Community Foundation was able to fill in 2011 for a number of agencies in the small Lake of the Ozarks-area town. Even a leadership change (Trevor Vernon taking over for Chalee Crouch as ECF president) couldn’t stop the philanthropy.
Among the grants made this year was a $1,000 grant to the Eldon Garden Club, which began work this summer on the first phase of a butterfly garden at the city’s Blue Star Memorial. It’s a wheelchair-accessible garden with parking space nearby and plants such as Catmint and Verbena, which attract butterflies, and informational plaques about the insects. Wet sand also is a part of the garden, because that is how butterflies drink.
Another ECF grant went to Eldon Upper Elementary for its annual Back-To-School Fair, which wound up drawing more than 100 people. The event was on the chopping block due to cuts from the state. The Eldon Parents and Teachers Organization said the event could not have happened without the support of the ECF.
