Bolivar Meets Community Challenges and Then Some

Bolivar Area Community Foundation board members present a check for $25,920 to the Bolivar Salvation Army as part of the Ozarks Hunger Challenge II

The word “challenge” has taken on many meanings this year in Bolivar and Polk County.

One meaning certainly applies to the two phases of the Ozarks Million Dollar Hunger Challenge, where the Walmart State Giving Foundation provided matching funds for local food pantries if communities could reach a certain threshold of donations. Turns out, the process was a “challenge” for Bolivar in name only; they blew their goal out of the water, collecting more than $16,000 in just the first phase of the challenge, which concluded last winter.

“We were just elated,” Co-Chairman Don Wollard said.

Additionally, the Bolivar affiliate was among the highest-collecting in the Ozarks Million Dollar Hunger Challenge II, which concluded this fall. A whopping total of $25,920 was presented to the Bolivar Salvation Army in the latest round.

One area that Wollard says truly is a challenge is getting the word out about planned giving and the Bolivar Area’s Legacy Society, which was a strategic focus of CFO’s region-wide during FY11.

“There is an enormous amount of money about to be transferred from one generation to the next,” Wollard said. “Many of them would just as soon give it to a non-profit organization as they would the kids, either because the kids have their own money or maybe they don’t have any kids. We could do a lot of good with that if we could just get the word out and promote it a little bit.”

Wollard points to the Legacy fund established by Bolivar-area resident Jim York last year as a perfect example.
