Legacy Focus, Technology Raise Awareness

Members of the Douglas County Community Foundation board present $5,000 community grants to Meals on Wheels and the Ava Senior Center. In all, the DCCF has distributed more than $160,000 since its inception just eight-plus years ago.

The Douglas County Community Foundation is planning for the future, and a new website is only part of the plan.

Over the past year, the DCCF not only launched a new website, www.douglascountyfoundation.org, but also brought in special speakers to educate the community about the importance of planned giving. Mr. Leon Combs, of Bradleyville, a regional leader in establishing endowments for long-term work in communities, spoke at the June luncheon of the Ava Chamber of Commerce. The luncheon was sponsored by the DCCF, and President Nancy Hawk says the board expects the sponsorship to become an annual tradition.

“(Leon) spoke about all different kinds of giving, but we asked him to specify the Legacy Giving,” Hawk said. “He also shared some of the history, that we’ve been doing this since 2003. We had a pretty good turnout.”

The Douglas County Community Foundation also launched its website to promote online grant applications, feature photos of the foundation and its grants at work in the community, and provide information on its Board of Governors.

Finally, the Douglas County Community Foundation’s community grantmaking activities are among the most robust in the CFO network, particularly for a county with a population of just more than 13,000 people.
